U.S. Presidential Inauguration Chart

All things have an inception time, and it is on this premise that one of the older branches of astrology, called mundane astrology, rests.  The premise is that in the birth of an enterprise or event will show its evolution and outcome.  Nations have "birth" charts, as well as corporations, countries, and even questions.  We shall examine these later, but I thought it would be timely to examine the chart of the Inauguration chart of the 44th President of the United States.

Even though, according to the Constitution, the President becomes "official" at the stroke of noon, I have run this chart for the actual time of the oath of office, 12:06 pm.  Incidentally, the tradition of taking an oath at noon stems from the coronation of William the Conqueror, who was crowned Christmas day 1066 at noon in London.  An even earlier example was the crowning of Charlemagne in the year 800, again on Christmas Day, and again at noon, the time having been chosen by the court's astrologer.  As you can see, this is an ancient tradition, and is still carried on today.

So, on to the present day.  The Sun and Moon are both angular, symbolizing swiftness of action.  We've already seen a little bit of this; Obama's team has been trying to get a "jump start" since the November election.  The inauguration chart seems to repeat this theme, so they may be able to stay ahead of the curve, however slightly.  Jupiter, the planet of expansion, is conjunct the Sun, and can mean this administration will do things in a "big way."  It can also mean that the administration will see large support, but also experience large setbacks.

The Moon in the seventh speaks well for the ability of this administration to work in a bi-partisan way, for the seventh house is the house of cooperation.  However, the Moon is void of course in this chart, not a good sign.  It is in the sign Scorpio, which symbolizes among other things, the stock market, taxes and the economy in general.  Because of this lunar placement, we as a people feel that the economy is the number one priority for this administration.  When the Moon is void, however, many things take a turn that is unexpected or unpredictable.  This could indicate a further drop in economic stability, or could indicate that there is nothing that can be done to rectify the situation. (Often, the Moon void of course means, literally, "nothing comes of it.") So this is the first red flag in the chart.

Next, we see Mercury retrograde on the mid-heaven, symbolizing the working and re-working of many economic problems, since Mercury rules the second house of money.  Mercury retrograde frequently means that things are done and re-done, said and re-said, so we will probably see a lot of that in this administration.  This is further emphacized by the Saturn/Uranus opposition, which is intercepted on the fifth and eleventh houses (the eleventh house is the house of goals, so those will probably be subject to change as well.).  Saturn is on the Midheaven, symbolizing our place in the world, and will make another exact opposition at the end of January, again in mid-August, and its final opposition in early September 2009.  Since Uranus represents our goals here, the constant opposition of Saturn, the representative of the administration's image, we will see a constant re-working of these issues, with changes peaking on the exact opposition times.

At the same time, we will also see Jupiter station on the Midheaven, retrograde, then move forward again.  This will give some optimistic turn to the changes that need to re-working at the time, and will probably allow the administration the time it needs to do so, while still maintaining good will.

Last, we see the Nodes of the Moon at a critical degree in the 4th and 10 th houses.  This says to me that the housing crisis is at the root of a LOT of the financial problems currently being suffered by the American economy.  When an important placement reaches a critical degree, it means that the situation has reached "critical mass," so to speak, and is sometimes on the verge of collapse.  The void of course Moon can also mean this, so this entire chart doesn't bode well for good times ahead.

However, one thing I have learned from many years of doing this is this: attitude is everything!!  If, during these rough and challenging times, the people as a whole take a negative outlook, this will probably cause negative expressions of the energies.  An attitude that reflects confidence, rather than arrogance, will mostly likely see us through these trying times, and we should return relatively unscathed, and hopefully, a whole LOT wiser.

So how will the President weather all these changes?  Interestingly, Mr. Obama has, as his Ascendant, the same degree of Aquarius as that of the Moon in the birth chart of the United States.  In a mundane chart, the Moon represents the people, and a connection like this speaks well for his continued popularity with the "man on the street."  Additionally, the ruler of his Ascendant, Uranus, falls in his seventh house, showing his ability to put himself in the shoes of others, and to negotiate successfully with many.  His sunny Leo disposition doesn't hurt, either.
